GEORGE EYRE & ANN FLETCHER (HARTLEY) |
|
When George
EYRE married Ann FLETCHER
at Handsworth, Sheffield, England, in 1822 he was described as a widower
and Ann as a widow. Ann, born
1798 at Woodhouse, was the daughter of Jonathan
and Mary HARTLEY.
On September 4, 1820, Ann Hartley married Thomas
FLETCHER. Four weeks
later Thomas died, on October 3, 1820, aged 25, the cause of his death
unknown to us. To date we
have been unable to find any information pertaining to George Eyre’s
first marriage, his birthplace or parents’ names. George and Ann Eyre had six children—Charles,
Oswald, Elizabeth, George, Ann and Sarah—but only two survived to
adulthood. Charles Eyre
(1823-1882) married Elizabeth SWIFT
(1825-1885) in Sheffield and they brought their large family to New
Zealand in 1859. Elizabeth Eyre
(born 1826) married John MOORE
and they had six children between 1848-1862—William, George, Herbert,
Emma, Arthur and John E. Elizabeth
Moore may have died before 1871 as she does not appear on that year’s
census with her husband and children. |

George Eyre died in March 1851 and Ann Eyre at Rainbow Forge, Beighton, in January 1859. They are buried at St Mary’s Church, Handsworth. George and Ann Eyre’s gravestone
