THOMAS
LAYBOURN |
|
On May 8, 1822, Thomas LAYBOURN of Berwick-on-Tweed, England, married Margaret CALDER at Foulden Deans, Scotland. Margaret was aged 25 and Thomas was 62! (Does anyone know if he had been married before? Later generations followed a strict naming pattern which suggests Thomas may have had an earlier family.) Margaret
and Thomas had three children—Adam, born Berwick-on-Tweed, 1925; Ann
Arvin, born Ayton, Scotland, 1827; Margaret, born 1830 in Scotland. Thomas
died in Ayton in May 1845, aged 85. He
is described as “a gentleman” and previous mentions describe him as
farmer/linen draper/merchant. Son
Adam married Mary Ann Elliott in Sunderland in 1851 and in 1864 they
brought their large family to New Zealand.
Mother Margaret and sister Margaret emigrated also, arriving in
Auckland early in 1865. |

To
date we have been unable to trace Ann Arvin (Irvine/Irving) Laybourn but
she is thought to be still living at the time of her mother Margaret’s
death in 1886 as two daughters are recorded on the death certificate. Adam
Laybourn in 1901. |
