JOHN FREEMAN

MARY ANNE POWELL

John FREEMAN was born about 1830.  In 1859 he married Mary Anne POWELL at the Registry Office, Crickhowell, in the County of Brecon, Wales.  On their wedding certificate John’s father is named as John FREEMAN (deceased), a collier.  His mother’s name is unknown.

John and Mary Anne had six children during the next 10 years—Annie, Martha, Rachel and Mary, followed by two sons, John Lewis and Thomas Isaac.

 John died in February 1871 at Garnfach, Nantyglo and was buried in Beaufort Cemetery.

Apart from his father’s name nothing is known of John’s ancestry.  He may have had a brother Lewis Freeman and a sister Mary.

 

Mary Anne POWELL was born in March 1840 at Beaufort, Wales.  She was the daughter of John POWELL and Amy BOWEN. 

In 1875 the widowed Mary Anne married John Lindsay SQUIRE.  They had a daughter, Elizabeth and three sons, Francis, Henry Lindsay and Harold Percival.

Three years later they migrated to New Zealand, arriving at Lyttelton in February 1879. 

Mary Anne Squire died at Christchurch in September 1912.
